Joe Hawley gave birth to a new Sunrise Rotary service program – 4th of July cookout at the Gillespie Center.  This past Saturday, a team of Sunrise Rotary members celebrated Independence Day with a delicious and fun cookout in service to fellow Westporters at the Gillespie Center.
Led by Top Chef Joe Hawley, a gang of seven put on quite a meal. Sous Chef John Branson prepared hamburgers two ways – the first batch followed the traditional holy burgers recipe and the second batch, saintly burgers spiced up with Bobby Q’s new barbecue sauce (this is the first product placement for The Crier). There were three salads – Maggie Feczko’s perfect potato salad (with and without vinegar), and Sheila Keenan’s “can I have seconds and thirds” green salad and fruit salad.
For starters, Malia Wong made her good-eats guacamole dip with organic blue and yellow corn chips that has been perfected from many parties at Davidson College. Then the master grillers took over as Joe and John first fired up the coals, then flipped and turned hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hotdogs and grilled cheese sandwiches.
Sean Keenan took care of service end and he made sure everyone had everything to eat and drink. Finally, in looking to find a place on the team, Joe with “do no harm” rule assigned Dennis Wong to quality control (as someone had to taste everything and to avoid the too many cooks problem).
Joe made it all happen. First he had the idea. Then he organized it all.  And finally, his commanding presence and leadership made it all happen as planned – on time and within budget.
Encore performance. Joe Hawley is looking for interested members to join him on another cookout at Gillespie on Saturday, August 1. So see Joe to sign up for a service project that feels
good as well as tastes good..

Dorothy Vickery is our 1st GFA Student of the Month
She was preceded to the podium by Janet Hartwell, GFA’s Headmistress, who told Club members meeting at Bobby Q’s on Main Street, that the school is a ”culture of achievement.”  Ms. Vickery is an achiever in this culture of achievement.  She is a leader of the school’s Community Service Board, the organization that oversees all its student community service projects; a volunteer at the Ahlbin Rehabilitation Center, and the Co-Head of their Bridgeport Schools Tutoring program, which enlists and directs GFA students tutoring in those schools.  And, as an “outside” activity, she is studying Arabic.  The Sunrise Rotary Club is one of over 33,000 Rotary clubs with 1.2 million members around the world, all dedicated to the organization’s motto of “Service Above Self.
The Westport Sunrise Rotary Club today presented its Student of the Month award to Dorothy Vickery, a Westport resident and a senior at Greens Farms Academy.  Ms. Vickery is the Club’s first  GFA honoree.
